For me, it really depends on what week it is. Zappa did so many incredible things in a relatively short career of 28 years. Freak Out! even after all these years is such an amazingly innovative work and yet most prog rockers probably aren't even aware of it, that it was mostly recorded in 1965 long before there was a King Crimson or ELP or Genesis or Yes etc. Freak Out! has been getting lots of rotation in my player lately. The Mothers were signed to MGM as a "white blues band" after the producer Tom Wilson walked into the Whiskey A-go-go and heard one tune and one tune only. On the big day, Zappa arrived at the studio with full master scores for orchestra that he'd hand-written. After recording two tunes, Wilson was on the phone to MGM telling them that:1. This isn't really what we thought we had2. We need a much bigger budget.Freak Out! is an amazing musical achievement and it's really the first "concept" rock album ever made, also the first 2-record set in rock. Now, all that said, the Zappa/Mothers that gets the most play in my house is Roxy and Elsewhere. The Sun Village/Echidna's Arf suite is the finest example of a tight band I have ever heard. I'm a semi-pro guitar player and have been playing in bands since 1975. I discovered Crimson at 16 years of age. I know what I'm talking about. You prog rockers who have not discovered the Roxy and Elsewhere CD need to get with the program because you SERIOUSLY don't know what you are missing.
